For Mephia Makwale, a safe home was once a dream.
Mephia was born to a 19-year-old mother who became pregnant and was later abandoned by the child’s father. At just eight months old, Mephia was enrolled in the child development programme supported through Phalombe Anglican Church, with support from Compassion International.
Following a thorough assessment, Mephia was identified as a Highly Vulnerable Child (HVC) and enrolled in the HVC programme. Children in this programme receive close and individualized support to address their most urgent needs and improve their overall wellbeing.
From vulnerability to hope
Before receiving support, Mephia and her mother were living in a small kitchen belonging to relatives. Her mother was raising her alone, facing the difficult challenge of caring for her young daughter without adequate housing.
Through the programme, Mephia was identified among the children who qualified for support to improve their housing conditions.
Today, her story is different.
Mephia and her mother have a safe, decent and comfortable home of their own.
The new home has given the family more than a roof over their heads. It has restored dignity, security, stability and hope.
A home that changes a future
For a vulnerable child, a safe home provides an important foundation for growth and development. It creates an environment where a child can feel secure, protected and cared for.
Mephia’s story demonstrates the importance of looking beyond the immediate needs of a child and addressing the circumstances that affect their wellbeing. Through individualized support and collaboration between the Anglican Church, ANGSOMA Development Commission, Compassion International and the community, a vulnerable child and her mother have been given an opportunity to build a more secure future.
Her new home stands as a visible reminder of what can happen when vulnerable children are identified, supported and surrounded by people who believe in their future.
